Points of Interest

1. Seminoe Dam and Reservoir - Fifty miles Northwest, it is an excellent year-round recreation area.

2. Shirley Basin and Shirley Mountains - Abounding in all types of wildlife, this area is located thirty-five miles North of Medicine Bow. A vast livestock industry is supported in the wide-open spaces of our area. But livestock alone does not grazed this land. It feeds deer, antelope and elk as well as sage chickens, blue grouse, ducks, geese, and other wildlife too numerous to mention; making our Medicine Bow area a sportsman's paradise.

3. Old Carbon - Fourteen miles West, once a booming town of nearly 3,000 people, its ghostly ruins crumble around the Old Carbon Cemetery.

4. Elk Mountain - Thirty miles South, this beautiful and majestic landmark stands 11,162 feet in elevation. The valley below Elk Mountain has beautiful fall colors, and provides a lovely agricultural view, and a respite from the surrounding desert conditions. The Medicine Bow River runs through the town of Elk Mountain, which nestles under the shadow of Elk Mountain itself.

5. Medicine Bow National Forest - Forty-three miles South, offers skiing, hinting, fishing, camping, and dude ranching. Roads are well marked, but check the weather before you travel into the hills. Snow comes sooner to the mountains than elsewhere.

6. Hanna Coal Mines - Nineteen miles West, is among the largest producing coal mines in the Western States. One of these mines has closed, another is slowing down in production. Other facilities are in planning stages.

7. Como Bluff and Dinosaur Museum - Seven miles East, the site of the famed Dinosaur Graveyard featured in Ripley, and one of the most renowned fossil beds ever discovered. The museum building is constructed entirely of dinosaur bones and is the "Oldest Building In America." Como Bluff is currently closed to the public.

8. East Allen Lake - One and one-half miles South, is known for its ice fishing and summer water sports and trout fishing. On Father's Day, the third Sunday of June each year, the Medicine Bow Lions Club sponsors a fishing derby at East Allen Lake which includes cash prizes for the fish of the day and a sundry of other prizes awarded.

9. Wind Turbines - Previous location for the largest wind turbines in the world. Medicine Bow's Museum has photos and info on them. We now have a large number of modern wind turbines in the area.

10. Virginian Hotel - The grand Virginian Hotel, a National Historic Place, adds to the historical atmosphere of Medicine Bow and Wyoming. Many interesting antiques are located throughout the hotel.

11. The Medicine Bow Museum - The museum, in the old railroad depot, offers historical collections and exhibits. The depot building was designated a National Historic Place 1982. The museum, inside the building, was established in 1983.

12. Owen Wister Cabin and Monument - Across from the Virginian Hotel, a monument made of petrified wood was erected in 1939 a s a tribute to Owen Wister and his book "The Virginian". The Owen Wister Cabin, brought from the Jackson Hole area as a Bicentennial project for the town, is located next to the monument.
