History of Tom Horn

Tom Horn Homestead near Medicine Bow, Wyoming

(Tom Horn's Homestead Near Medicine Bow, Wyoming.)

The legendary Tom Horn came to Wyoming during the Range Wars of the 1890's.

He hired on as a stock detective with the Swan Land and Cattle Company located about 50 miles northwest of Cheyenne, Wyoming. His job was to scare would-be ranchers and farmers out of the Iron Mountain area. While in this employment, Horn was supposedly responsible for the elimination of several rustlers in the area. In addition, he was implicated in the murder of a fourteen year old boy named Willie Nickell.

In 1901, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, a jury found him guilty and he was hanged in November of 1903. A reprieve finally came to Tom Horn in 1993 when forensic experts and Amnesty International staged a re-trial in which Horn was found not guilty - just less than a century too late to actually do him any good.
