Guernsey Wagon Ruts and
Fort Laramie
The
travel of pioneer wagons was so heavy on the sandstone in
Guernsey Wyoming that ruts from the wheels were worn deep
into the rocks. Wind and water erosion has further deepened
and preserved the tracks of the Western immigrants. If
History gives you a thrill, you don't want to miss this one.

From
Medicine Bow, head east on Highway 30, and turn NorthEast at
the turnoff for Wheatland (highway 34), just past Bosler.
This takes you through a scenic area, past the Sybille
Wildlife Reserve, and comes out on I-25. Go North on I-25
for about another 20 minutes, then turn east on Highway 25
to Guernsey. It is another 15 to 20 minutes east to the
wagon rut site. You will pass the entrance to the Guernsey
State Park, and just before entering the town of Guernsey
there is a bridge. Just this side of the bridge there is a
gravel road on the right. Turn onto that road and follow it
up till you see a sign pointing to the turnoff for the
Historical Site.
The
site has a parking lot and rest rooms at the bottom of the
hill. The ruts are about 1/4 mile up a well maintained
trail, though people who have trouble with stairs may not be
able to hike up as it is fairly steep in spots. There are
benches at the top to rest for those who find the hike
difficult, and the path leads right to the ruts. Bring your
camera, this is truly an awesome site!
You
can continue on to Fort Laramie to see the restored Fort
along with unrestored buildings there if you like. Admission
at Ft. Laramie is $2 per adult, receipt is good for
admission repeatedly during the following 7 days. Ft.
Laramie is about 15 minutes east of Guernsey, and the route
is well marked.

Guernsey
is about 2 hours from Medicine Bow. Plan on a full day to
see this site from the Bow.
