Remembering with
Honor
For the premiere of this website section, I've
included a photo of my parents, Les and LaVerne
Roberts. I am very proud of them. Without their
help and initial investment in my dream of a
community newspaper, the Medicine Bow Post would
have never existed. They moved to Medicine Bow
several years after I started the newspaper and
they also were very important in the daily
operations of the business. LaVerne (who died this
past August 2000) served as a co-publisher,
circulation manager, bookkeeper, and the best
proof-reader the Post ever had. Besides serving as
town treasurer, Les (1915-1989) also served as a
newspaper co-publisher and tax accountant. I had
lots of help with the newspaper from family,
friends and staff. This photo of Les and LaVerne
was taken by a friend when they and I enjoyed an
evening dinner at the Como Bluff home of Paul and
Jody Fultz in 1988

The Birth of a Landmark
The top tower section of what was once called
the MOD-2 wind turbine was lifted into place in
August of 1981. Two giant wind turbines would
eventually stand tall on the prairie south of
Medicine Bow. Wind energy efforts in the Medicine
Bow area were ahead of their time, as now many
states and companies are finding good reason to
utilize the energy source.

Bringing In The Sheep
Ted Cronberg of Cronberg Brothers, Inc. stood
among his flock of more than 4,000 sheep, which were sheared over that weekend
in May of 1983. If I had a question about town history, I would run to Ted
for an answer.
One time after Sunday church services at the United Methodist
Church in Medicine Bow, I mentioned to Ted that, when I was a child, I
thought the words to the hymn "Bringing in the Sheaves," were instead,
"Bringing in the sheep. Bringing in the sheep. We will come rejoicing, bringing in
the sheep." Ted, who had a great sense of humor, laughed and said that my
misinterpretation of the word would have still worked just fine for the
message of the hymn.

The Road to the White
House
Most Medicine Bow Post photos were
black-and-white photos. Former Wyoming Congressman
Dick Cheney, who also served as U.S. Secretary of
Defense, becomes America's Vice President this
month. In the photo shown at the left, Lynne and
Dick Cheney campaigned in Medicine Bow in the late
1970s. The Medicine Bow Post had an unwritten
policy that it would only put candidates' photos
and interviews in the newspaper if the candidate
physically came to Medicine Bow to talk to
residents, which most Wyoming candidates were
pleased to do. Some Bow Post exceptions were a
special question-and-answer series that was
accomplished by phone interviews and if interviews
were conducted in other places, such as a time in
1982 when I interviewed Rep. Cheney at his office
in Washington, D.C. Mr. Cheney was always very
pleasant and accessible. Good luck, Mr. Vice
President.
